ABOUT
Hi, I’m Tessa Kappe (she/her)
I’m a clinical herbalist and educator based on unceded Ohlone land in San Francisco, California. Prior to herbalism I spent a decade leading nonprofit programs in social and ecological healing via nature connection, food justice and nutrition for city youth.
I grew up on unceded Tongva and Chumash land, with one foot on the sidewalk of Los Angeles and the other in the chaparral of Topanga Canyon’s coastal hills, road tripping and camping throughout California and Baja Mexico with family. I can picture the bright bougainvillea climbing my apartment as a kid and am curious about plants wherever I go, routinely distracted by weeds at my feet.
I earned a B.A. in Politics with a focus in Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz while immersed in social justice organizing and sustainability/DIY/bike culture. Inspired by urban gardens from travels in the U.S. and Europe, I returned to California to cultivate healing through nature in our cities.
After 10 years of urban gardening and teaching public school kids I completed a 3 year clinical herbalist certification at Scarlet Sage Herb Co.’s School of Traditional Healing Arts (now Land of Verse), where I later worked and have taught Botany to herbalists since 2020. I also lead public workshops and urban herb walks.
My creative leanings wind up in backyard salads, bouquets, visual arts and other crafty projects. I’m a farmers market and fermentation fan, Permaculture Design certified gardener and live with my partner in the Excelsior neighborhood of San Francisco.
I’m inspired by the wisdom and beauty of nature and seek healing for our earth and all living beings. I love building relationships with clients and supporting their self care practice through the allyship of nature.
I look forward to supporting you!
